M14 & M1 Garand NM Rear Sight Operation

The National Match (NM) Rear Sight has 3 special components over the standard Rear Sight Assembly. These are the National Match Rear Sight Base, the National Match Rear Sight Windage Knob and the National Match Rear Sight Hooded Aperture.

NM Rear Sight Hooded Apertures come in two peep hole sizes, a 0.0595″ which is standard and a 0.0520″. The peep hole size is marked on the top of the hood.

National Match Rear Sights are capable of 1/2 minute correction for both windage and elevation compared to the standard rear sight which is capable of only 1 minute of correction for windage and elevation.

While basic elevation is still 1 minute per click of the elevation knob the finer 1/2 minute adjustment is achieved by rotating the hooded eyepiece. By rotating the eyepiece 180° the offset peep hole will provide a 1/2 minute adjustment. The notch in the hood of the eyepiece when up gives a full 1 minute of value for every click of the elevation knob. By rotating the eyepiece hood 180° so the notch is down elevation is lowered 1/2 minute.

To achieve 1/2 minute windage the NM Rear Sight Base and NM Windage Knob are threaded 64tpi vs. 32tpi on the standard base and knob. An alternate NM Windage Knob designed to work with a standard rear sight base has 8 notches which works with a ball bearing set in the receiver.
